The History of our Club
Introduction.
Rotary was founded in Chicago in 1905, by four business men who were new to the city. They agreed to meet for lunch once a week, and 'rotate' through each one's office. From this small start Rotary International began. This became the world's first volunteer organisation.
In 1928 the Rotary Club of Edmonton was formed, originally again by four men, leading to an inaugural meeting at The Rose and Crown, Church Street, with 28 persons present. By the 4th December 1928, the Club was truly launched, formed of local business men, and practitioners. Well known businesses at that time include Bradleys, Blake and Horlock, Dancy's, Fred Wade, and Heruads.
Edmonton Club soon established a reputation for hard work serving the local and international communities, accompanied by fun and a light hearted approach.
Times have changed in many ways. Today we still meet weekly, to share a meal, and discuss local and international projects. Our membership, which includes many women, is interesting and varied, and although largely retired, there are many still at work.
Any duties required of members are rarely carried out alone, so we are always in good company, sharing the moment, and invariably having fun.
