What is Rotary
Introduction.
Rotary is a volunteer organization of 1.2 million individuals around the world who have come together to provide humanitarian service and help build goodwill and peace.
Some 32,000 Rotary clubs in over 200 countries and geographical regions are running projects to address present-day challenges which include lack of clean drinking water, illiteracy, disease, famine, poverty and environmental concerns, whilst at the same time promoting high ethical standards in all professions.
The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International is the world's largest private provider of international scholarships, helping over a thousand students to study abroad and serve as cultural ambassadors each year. Rotary also works with seven prestigious universities around the world giving the opportunity to gain a master's degree in peace and conflict resolution.
PolioPlus is Rotary's flagship program. Rotary, along with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is a leading partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. When polio has finally been eradicated, Rotary Club members will have contributed 850m US dollars and countless volunteer hours to immunize more than two billion children in 122 countries.
Rotary was founded in Chicago in 1905 as the world's first volunteer organization, and it expanded rapidly around the world. Clubs meet weekly to plan service projects, discuss local and global issues, and enjoy community. Clubs are apolitical and open to any race, culture or faith.
